Musee d'Orsay voted World's Best Museum in 2018
Paris' Musee d'Orsay was named World's Best Museum in 2018 in the Traveler's Choice Awards, an event run by TripAdvisor. According to the company, the winner was chosen based on the analysis of millions of online reviews on its sites.
Trailing behind the Musee d'Orsay was the New York National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the Metropolitan Museum. New York's locations were followed by the British Museum in London and the National Museum of the Prado in Madrid. Paris' Louvres took the 7th spot in the rankings, despite being recognised as the world's most visited museum, drawing in about 8,1 million of tourists per year.
Opened in 1986 on the bank of Paris' Seine river, the Musee d'Orsay now welcomes near 3.5 million tourists every year showcasing a wide array of artistic periods, mostly focused on 18th, 19th and 20th century art. Hosting a train station before being converted into a museum, the site is now one of the most visited in Paris.
Last year, TripAdvisor's title had gone to the MET in New York, which had already snapped up the award in 2016. Now a public company with a market cap of $6.9 billion, TripAdvisor was first founded in 2000 as a site focusing on user generated reviews.
