Luftwaffe's Airbus 340 “Konrad Adenauer”

The negligence of Lufthansa employees caused the incident with the breakdown of Germany’s government-owned Airbus A340 airliner, Konrad Adenauer, in which German Chancellor Angela Merkel went to the G-20 summit in Argentina in late November.

A subsidiary of the airline Lufthansa-Technik made modifications to the aircraft in 2009 and since then has regularly carried out maintenance of the aircraft. One of the changes was the installation in 2010 of the digital communication system "Audio management unit", however, as the newspaper notes, the company did not inform the pilots of the aircraft about this and did not send the appropriate instructions for working with the modified unit in emergency situations. The report of the Bundeswehr states that the system did not respond to the actions prescribed in the instructions for restarting the system. The pilots managed to reach the ground only via satellite phone.

After this incident, the German Ministry of Defense intends to request at least € 300 million from the state budget to buy a new Airbus aircraft for Chancellor Angela Merkel, Bild writes. The agency also raises the question of increasing the number of employees who serve the flights of members of the German government.

As the German Defense Minister Ursula von der Lyayen explained, “it was annoying that the chancellor was late for the G20 summit” because of a breakdown of the government plane, so that “this would not happen again, we will increase the number of crews and study the issue of acquiring one or two new long-range aircraft.

The Cabinet of Ministers is considering the possibility of buying aircraft of the A330 or A350 type, the cost of which varies from 200 to 300 million euros. The defense minister told the newspaper that the funds should be allocated from the federal budget.
