Airbus Helicopters approved the draft design of a high-speed twin-engined helicopter-demonstrator Racer (Rapid and Cost-Effective Rotorcraft - "high-speed and economical helicopter"), according to the European aircraft manufacturer.

The program also passed the stage of testing aerodynamic characteristics. The next step is to start the production of key components.

Production of the transmission of the machine has already been launched. The prototype assembly should begin in the fourth quarter of 2019. Recall that the demonstration helicopter will be equipped with Safran Aneto-1X engines, designed to increase the speed of the helicopter to 400 km / h.

Now the Airbus helicopter unit, together with the project partners, is developing an aircraft demonstration flight plan in 2020 as part of the Clean Sky 2 initiative. A total of about 200 flight hours are planned. In the first part of the program, the ranges of operational flight modes will be gradually expanded and the main indicators will be assessed - in particular, speed, controllability, stability and aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft.

The second part will show the suitability of the aircraft for search and rescue and sanitary works, as well as private transportation. In addition, flight modes that are unique to Racer with a low level of external noise will be accumulated.

Airbus explained that speed performance is achieved thanks to a special aerodynamic shape, lightweight construction material, streamlined equipment, as well as a large number of settings and optimizations. This allows you to reach a speed of 50% higher than that of conventional helicopters.
